Hé, wil je even luisteren?
Luisteren is een kunst. Goed luisteren is een expertise. Echt goed luisteren is een wonder. Goed luisteren vergt onafgebroken aandacht, regelmatig oefenen en discipline.
Luisteren is niet alleen maar horen wat er gezegd wordt, het is veel meer: het is horen wat er achter de woorden van de ander opgesloten ligt en tussen de regels door gezegd wordt. Je kunt rustig stellen dat goed luisteren vooral de kunst is van het horen wat er niet gezegd wordt. De verborgen boodschap leren horen en begrijpen.
Wel apart eigenlijk dat luisteren vooral de kunst is om te horen wat er niet gezegd wordt. Hoe zit dat eigenlijk, waarom is het zo moeilijk om gewoon te zeggen waar het op staat, en uit te spreken wat er in je hart leeft?
Het antwoord is eenvoudig genoeg. Het komt omdat we onszelf heel veel dingen nog niet bewust zijn. We hebben de andere mens nodig om ons die dingen bewust te worden, en te maken. Je bent niet eerder dan dat in staat om ze uit te spreken. Zo einfach ist es.
Voor bewustwording hebben we een luisterend oor nodig. Een goede luisteraar weet de juiste vragen te stellen en helpt ons om ons bewust te worden van wat er op de bodem van ons hart ligt. Een goede luisteraar spiegelt, geeft aan ons terug wat hij of zij gehoord heeft.
‘ Je bent eigenlijk heel boos hè, over wat je mij nu vertelt. “
‘ Ik zie dat je erg enthousiast bent.’
‘ Je lijkt me erg teleurgesteld over wat er gebeurd is. ‘
Een goede luisteraar gaat niet in op de feiten die je vertelt, maar reageert op je gevoelens. Hierdoor word je gedwongen om naar jezelf te kijken. Door die ene simpele opmerking kun je er niet omheen: Ja, je bent boos, je bent enthousiast, je bent verdrietig of teleurgesteld.
Hierna komt de vraag aan de orde waarom je deze gevoelens hebt. Het verhaal dat je verteld hebt, daaraan liggen gevoelens ten grondslag die iets in jezelf geraakt hebben. Altijd wanneer je fel, hartstochtelijk of emotioneel op iets reageert, ligt er achter zo`n heftige reactie een oud, onverwerkt en onbewust trauma in jezelf verborgen. Het is zaak om jezelf ervan bewust te zijn of je bereid bent kritisch naar jezelf te kijken. Want alleen dan ben je in staat om tot een groeiend zelfinzicht te komen. En een trauma dat aan het licht komt, kan genezen worden.
Het is erg belangrijk dat je een gesprekspartner hebt die niet- emotioneel op jouw verhaal kan reageren. Als je gesprekspartner oordeelt over wat je vertelt, dan geef die gesprekspartner de ander niet de gelegenheid om zich bewust te worden van achterliggende gedachten of gevoelens. Feitelijk plug je dan de ander vaster en dieper in woede, wrok, teleurstelling, of welke gevoelens dan ook.
Er zijn veel mensen die nog steeds een diep verborgen, oude en onverwerkte boosheid in zich voelen die nog uit hun jeugd stamt. Vreemd genoeg komen zulke oude, onbewuste emoties tot leven zodra we boos worden om iets wat er in het gewone leven gebeurt. Ze zouden helemaal tot leven komen wanneer de ander emotioneel op onze emoties reageert.
Het is supergaaf om iemand te hebben waar je tegenaan kunt praten, en die door de juiste vragen te stellen jou helpt om tot inzicht te komen. Zodoende helpt het jou om zelf te ontdekken wat er aan de hand de hand is. Het leert je om zelf ook zo iemand te worden voor een ander mens. Emoties zijn besmettelijk: de boosheid van de ander raakt in zekere zin de boosheid in jezelf aan. De angst van de ander raakt de angst in jezelf aan, en de onmacht van de ander raakt je eigen onmacht aan. De emoties van de ander brengen je eigen emoties tot leven.
Het is belangrijk dat je jezelf hiervan bewust bent, en dat je tegen je eigen emoties kunt zeggen: nu even niet, want ik wil met mijn aandacht bij de ander blijven. Dit is eigenlijk erg moeilijk. Je ego vindt het namelijk helemaal niet leuk als je dat geen aandacht geeft, maar je aandacht gericht houdt op de ander. Je eigen ego zal er alles aan doen om jouw aandacht weer op zichzelf gericht te krijgen, en het heeft ook allerlei trucjes om dat voor elkaar te krijgen.
Om de ander de goede vragen te kunnen stellen, moet je je gevoelsmatig in de ander kunnen verplaatsen. Je moet eigenlijk de emoties die door de ander heengaan, in je eigen hart voelen: empathie. Daardoor begrijp je van binnenuit wat er nu eigenlijk in de ander omgaat. Je neemt niet op een afstandelijke manier waar maar je doorvoelt met je hart.
Dit is echt de enige manier om goed naar iemand anders te luisteren. Je moet er in zekere zin een offer voor brengen. Je moet je aandacht weghalen bij je eigen ego, en helemaal richten op de ander. Een dergelijk offer kan heel veel bewerken: dat de ander de weg naar binnen gaat, inzicht krijgt, en echt verder komt op de weg van geestelijke groei.
Alleen een goede luisteraar zal het overkomen dat mensen zich werkelijk uit gaan spreken. Want de meeste mensen voelen intuïtief aan of de ander hem of haar echt hoort, en hem of haar terug zal geven wat voor emoties het door hem of haar gedane verhaal oproept. Zo zul je de eigen gevoeligheid van mensen niet kwetsen. Integendeel, je zult de ander het gevoel geven dat die zich bevrijd voelt van een last of zwaarte.
Dat is een wonder. Ons echte luisteren kan een ander mens bevrijden en genezen. Gedeelde smart is halve smart, gedeelde vreugde is dubbele vreugde. Het geeft de ander het gevoel dat die er niet alleen voorstaat, omdat iemand anders bereid en in staat is om datgene wat hem of haar zwaar valt, met het hart mee te dragen.
Vergeet bij dit alles de woorden van Jezus niet, die gezegd heeft: ‘ Waar twee of drie in Mijn Naam bijeen zijn, ben Ik in hun midden. ‘ Dat komt omdat we dan in de geest van Christus bijeen zijn. Zijn Geest is werkzaam in ons. Deze Geest is de kracht die wonderen tot stand brengt!
