Voor alles wat er gebeurt, is er een uur,
Een tijd voor alles wat er is onder de hemel.
( Prediker 3 : 1 )
Voor alles wat er onder de hemel gebeurt is er een juiste tijd. Wij leven in een wereld die onafgebroken aan verandering onderhevig is. De gebeurtenissen van de tijd, en de situaties waarin de verschillende mensen zich bevinden zijn heel divers. Daar komt nog bij dat onze persoonlijke situatie van dag tot dag verandert. In de raderen van ons leven staat nu eens de ene spaak bovenaan, dan weer de andere. Ons leven bestaat uit perioden van eb en vloed, van toe- en afnemen, van het ene uiterste tot het andere.
De Bijbel leert ons dat wij – als het goed gaat, en wij voorspoedig zijn, gerust, maar niet zorgeloos mogen leven. De Heere vindt het goed dat wij in vertrouwen op God het goede van onze arbeid genieten. Het is de kunst om niet te euforistisch te zijn als het ons goed gaat, en niet terneergeslagen als het ons niet zo goed gaat. Veel beter is het om gelijkmatig gestemd alle gebeurtenissen in ons eigen leven, zowel als in de wereld om ons heen waakzaam af te wachten.
Alles heeft een bestemde tijd. De dag maakt plaats voor de nacht, en de nacht wijkt weer voor de dag. De winter gaat over in het voorjaar, het voorjaar bot uit in zomer, de zomer verkleurt naar herfst, en de herfst gaat over in winter.
Sommige veranderingen zijn duidelijk een daad van God. Andere hangen meer af van de wil van mensen. Alles onder de hemel is veranderlijk, maar in de hemel heerst een onveranderlijke situatie.
Er is een tijd om geboren te worden, en een tijd om te sterven.
God geeft de mens een tijd om te planten, maar als het geplantte onvruchtbaar wordt en niet meer nuttig is, dan wordt het tijd om het geplantte uit te roeien.
Er is een tijd om te doden, als de oordelen van God uitgaan, maar er is ook een tijd om te genezen wat Hij heeft verscheurd. ( Hosea 6 : 1, 2 )
Er is een tijd om een volk te troosten naar de dagen waarin het verdrukt werd. ( Psalm 90 : 15 ). Dat is wanneer mensen tot de Heere terugkeren.
Er is een tijd waarop God oproept tot blijmoedigheid, een tijd om te lachen en op te springen, dat is de tijd waarop de Heere verwacht dat wij Hem zullen dienen met blijdschap en vrolijkheid in ons hart. ( Psalm 100 )
Er is een tijd om stenen weg te werpen door vestingen af te breken, wanneer God vrede in het land geeft. Er is ook een tijd om stenen te vergaderen, en vestingen op te bouwen.
Er is een tijd om een vriend te omhelzen, wanneer wij een mooie trouwe vriendschap ervaren, maar er is ook een tijd om daar ver vandaan te zijn, om welke reden dan ook.
Er is een tijd om geld te verzamelen en spaarzaam te zijn, een tijd om goede zaken te doen als de gelegenheid zich voordoet, maar er is ook een tijd om geld verloren te laten gaan. Dat is een tijd wanneer alles wat we verdienden weer even snel uitgegeven is.
Er is een tijd om klederen te scheuren, zoals in Israël de gewoonte was bij tijden van groot verdriet, en een tijd om de klederen weer toe te naaien, ten teken dat de smart voorbij is.
Er is een tijd om te zwijgen, als het een gevaarlijke tijd is. ( Amos 5 : 13 ), of als wij het gevaar lopen om iets verkeerd te zeggen, maar er is ook een tijd om te spreken tot eer en heerlijkheid van God.
Er is een tijd om lief te hebben, en onze vriendschap te laten blijken, er is ook een tijd om te haten, dat betekent: om iets of iemand op de tweede plaats te zetten.
Er is een tijd van oorlog als God het zwaard trekt ten oordeel, als de mensen het zwaard trekken voor gerechtigheid, maar wij kunnen hopen op een tijd van vrede als het zwaard van de Heere in de schede zal getrokken worden en Hij de oorlogen doet ophouden. ( Psalm 46 : 10 )
Het is God die de tijden vaststelt zonder dat de mens daar invloed op uit kan oefenen. Toch staat de mens in zijn handelen niet zondermeer buiten spel. Dat geldt zelfs voor de handeling waarbij wij dat het minst zouden verwachten, ons sterven. Hoewel het God is die de juiste tijd bepaalt, is het mogelijk dat wij mensen door ondoordacht of onverstandig leven een voortijdige dood sterven. ( Pred. 7 : 17 )
Zo niet de Heere. Hij heeft alles op de juiste tijd gemaakt. Ook heeft Hij de eeuwigheid in ons hart gelegd. Een bewustzijn van eeuwigheid.
Aan het einde van het jaar, op Oudejaarsdag worden wij daar bijzonder bij bepaald. We kijken terug naar 2021 dat achter ons ligt, en helemaal gekleurd werd door de pandemie en alles wat daarmee samenhangt.
Wie zijn ogen richt op alles hier beneden is bezorgd, en misschien wel bang.
Wie zijn ogen richt op de Heere, voelt zich ondanks alles veilig, bedaard, moedig en is niet bang.
God houdt alles in Zijn hand.
Niets loopt Hem uit de hand.
Wie Zijn hoop op God vestigt, voelt zich verantwoordelijk, en blijft zich toeleggen op het doen van Gods wil in zijn leven.
Als wij alles tegelijk zouden kunnen overzien zouden wij zien dat er niets onnodigs is in Gods plan, niets wat gemist kan worden.
Welke veranderingen wij in deze wereld ook zien wij moeten de onverbreekbare standvastigheid van Gods regering erkennen.
Zonder vroomheid en ontzag voor God is alles in deze wereld ijdelheid, vluchtig en van voorbijgaande aard.
Het leven in ontzag voor God daarentegen typeert de mens die in de juiste verhouding tot zijn Schepper staat.
