Nadat Lydia de apostel Paulus met zijn evangelisatieteam ontvangen had, ging het nieuws over de komst van deze bijzondere mensen als een lopend vuurtje door de stad Tyatira. De gebedsplaats van de rivier werd vaste plaats van samenkomst, iedereen kwam luisteren.
Op een gegeven moment kwam het team een jonge slavin tegen met een waarzeggende geest. Lucas – de arts – dacht dat ze door een demon bezeten was. Als waarzegster verdiende ze bakken geld voor haar eigenaren. Zoals altijd wanneer ergens het Woord en de Kracht van de Heere openbaar komen, manifesteert de satan zich. De hele dag liep de arme vrouw achter Paulus en zijn team aan en riep ononderbroken: “ deze mensen zijn dienaren van de allerhoogste God en verkondigen u hoe u gered kunt worden! “
Hoewel Paulus de eerste dagen dit geroep maar over zich liet komen, begon hij het wel lastig te vinden, al dat geschreeuw om hem heen. Hij besefte dat het de bedoeling was om het werk van God belachelijk te maken! Paulus herkende er het werk van de satan in. De uitspraak van de slavin is namelijk terug te vinden in soortgelijke omstandigheden in de Bijbel. ( Lucas 4: 33 – 35 / 8: 28 – 35 ) In een heidense context kon de uitdrukking dienstknechten van de Allerhoogste God dubbelzinnig zijn en verwijzen naar een godheid die door de toehoorders werd beschouwd als de oppergod van de ontelbare goden die door hen aanbeden werden.
“ Ik beveel je in de naam van Jezus Christus, verlaat haar! “ beval Paulus de geest. Direct verliet de geest de slavin. Dezelfde kracht en macht die de Heere Jezus gebruikte bij Zijn genezingen was de oorzaak van het wegvluchten van de satan.
Wat een tegenvaller! De eigenaren van de vrouw werden woedend. Hun bron van inkomsten viel weg. De boze geest leek echter zijn intrek te nemen bij de eigenaren van de slavin!
Paulus en Silas werden vastgegrepen en naar het marktplein gesleurd. Op deze plaats – de agora – behandelden de stadsbestuurders civielrechterlijke zaken.
“ Deze mensen brengen onze stad in rep en roer! Het zijn Joden die een levenswijze verkondigen waarmee wij als Romeinen niet mogen instemmen en zeker niet in praktijk mogen brengen! “ riepen ze.
De geest van woede verspreidde zich over de toegestroomde menigte. Iedereen keerde zich tegen Paulus en Silas. In die tijd was het zo dat, als je maar hard en massaal ging roepen : “ weg met die man! “ je een geseling gedaan kon krijgen. Zo ging het nu ook. De stadsbestuurders scheurden Paulus en Silas de kleren van het lijf en vaardigden het bevel uit om hen met stokslagen te straffen! Men dacht dat de verdachten zo wel de waarheid zouden gaan spreken.
Het regende een groot aantal slagen op de ruggen van Paulus en Silas. Toen de straf voltrokken was werden ze opgesloten in de gevangenis. Hun voeten werden vastgeklonken in een blok. Pijn en tegenslag. Het werk van God in Filippi leek een roemloos einde beschoren. Had de Macedonische man vergeefs geroepen : “ Kom over, en help ons? “
Midden in de nacht waren Paulus en Silas in gebed verzonken.
De beste Gids en Leidsman hier op aarde slaapt en sluimert nooit. Zijn Geest kan niet begrensd worden. Waar Hij komt, daar neemt Hij alles mee! Vreugde, vrede, liefde en troost.
Hoewel de uitkomst vreselijk leek, bleef God Dezelfde!
Niet gehinderd door donkerheid nog tegenslag bleven Paulus en Silas bidden en zongen ze lofliederen voor God. Hun gezang verspreidde zich door de gevangenis. Op deze desolate plaats daalde de Heere Zelf met vrede en blijdschap neer. Door het kreunen en zuchten het lijden, de vuilheid en de pijn van deze vergeten groep stakkerds kwam de liefde van God via Zijn gefolterde dienstknechten tot volle ontplooiing! Wat een God! Wanneer Hij spreekt, dan is het , wanneer Hij gebiedt, dan staat het er.
De Heere Zelf zette Zijn boodschap kracht bij! Een hevige aardschok liet de gevangenis op haar grondvesten trillen! Alle deuren sprongen open en bij elke gevangene schoten de boeien los.
Iedereen was vrij!
