Nehemia droogde zijn tranen en ging weer aan het werk. Er gingen vier maanden voorbij zonder dat er iets noemenswaardigs gebeurde. Het was in de maand nisan, het twintigste regeringsjaar van Artaxerxes. De koning verbleef in zijn winterpaleis, hij had zijn schenker niet meegenomen. Er restte Nehemia niets anders dan gelaten te wachten tot Artaxerxes zijn intrek weer op de burcht Susa nam. De deplorabele toestand van Jeruzalem was geen ogenblik uit zijn gedachten en Nehemia bad, al wachtend op de terugkeer van de koning.
De vier maanden gingen tergend langzaam voorbij, en de koning keerde met zijn gevolg terug. De eerste maaltijd werd voorbereid en Nehemia nam zijn positie als schenker in.

Artaxerxes keek zijn trouwe dienaar verheugd aan. Nooit had Nehemia zijn vorst iets verkeerds aangedaan. Maar de vier maanden van vasten, rouwen en bidden hadden hun sporen nagelaten op het integere gezicht van Nehemia.
De blik van de koning verscherpte zich. “ Waarom kijk je zo somber Nehemia, je bent toch niet ziek? Er moet iets aan de hand zijn. “ zei hij resoluut. Nehemia schrok ontzettend. Koninklijke functionarissen mochten tijdens het uitoefenen van hun functie niets van hun privéleven laten merken. Het minste vergrijp kon je het leven kosten. Een betrokken gezicht kon op intrige of verraad wijzen.
“ Koning, leef in eeuwigheid! Ik voel me slecht omdat ik mij zorgen maak om de stad van mijn voorouders. De hele stad is met de grond gelijk gemaakt, en de poorten zijn verbrand. “ antwoordde Nehemia. Artaxerxes voelde haarfijn aan dat zijn trouwe bediende iets bedoelde te zeggen, en vroeg Nehemia op de man af welke vraag hij had.
Een snelle bede steeg op naar de hemel. Nehemia zocht altijd zijn hulp en toevlucht in het gebed. ( 1 : 4 / 5 : 19 / 6 : 9, 14 / 13 : 14 / 22. 29, 31 ) Opvallend feit is dat hij zich niet zodanig wegcijferde dat hij de Heere niet herinnerde aan alles wat hij voor zijn God gedaan had. ( 13 : 14 , 22, )
Nehemia`s gebeden waren hard nodig want het leven van een dienaar binnen de wrede hofetiquette was zijn leven nooit zeker. Het minste vergrijp kon je de kop kosten en liet je op de bodem van de leeuwenkuil, aan de strop, of met vergif in je maag je leven eindigen.
Maar de Geest van de Heere werd vaardig over Nehemia. “ Als u het goed vindt, koning, en mij de juiste persoon acht, wilt u mij dan naar het gebied van Juda sturen? Dan ga ik daar Jeruzalem weer opbouwen, de stad waar zich de graven van mijn voorouders bevinden.¨ zei hij dapper. Artaxerxes keek Nehemia aan. Daar zat hij, de rijke heidense koning die voor mens noch enige God respect had. Hij zat naast zijn voorkeursvrouw – Artaxerxes grossierde in vrouwen – zoals het de gewoonte was in die tijd. Wat een contrast, de treurige Nehemia en de decadente Artaxerxes. Maar de Heer bestuurde het lot van Zijn kind en Zijn volk door alles heen.
“ Hoe lang gaat je reis duren, Nehemia? En wanneer kun je weer terug zijn? “ vroeg hij welwillend. Met een kloppend biddend hart legde Nehemia zijn gedachten aan de koning voor. “ Wilt u brieven meegeven voor de bestuurders van de provincie Trans Eufraat? Dan kan ik via dit gebied naar Juda reizen. Wilt u mij ook een brief geven voor Asaf, de koninklijke houthandelaar met het verzoek om hout voor de deuren in de poorten van de tempel, de stadsmuur, en mijn eigen huis? “ Het ongelooflijke gebeurde. De koning gaf een wenk. Met gezwinde spoed werden alle brieven geschreven, en met het koninklijke zegel verzegeld. Het was duidelijk God die Nehemia gunstig gezind was en het hart van de koning neigde tot al wat Hij wilde. De brieven waren vrijgeleiden die als paspoort dienden en Nehemia voeding, drank en bescherming garandeerden. Opmerkelijk hoe goed de Heere voor Nehemia zorgde. Niets ontging zijn liefdevolle zorg en Zijn beschermend oog. Niemand kon bevroeden dat Nehemia twaalf jaar afwezig zou zijn. ( 5 : 14 )
