The Holy Trinity Church ligt rustig en mooi in het mistige morgenlicht. Het is vroeg maar de deuren staan al open. Als we de kerk ingaan komt onze schoonzoon ons blij tegemoet. De kerk is nog leeg, achter de schermen heerst een bedrijvige drukte. We kijken wat rond en laten de sfeer op ons inwerken. Op een van de banken staat de maxi-cosi met de kleine Esther. Onwetend van het feit dat ze vandaag gedoopt zal worden ligt ze te heerlijk slapen. Vertederd kijken we naar haar kleine lieve gezichtje. Dan zoeken we een plek. Onze kinderen schuiven naast ons de bank in, vanuit Zeeland en Rotterdam in Utrecht aangeland. Iedereen is er, en de kleine dopeling blijft gewoon vanaf de eerste tot de laatste minuut in de kerk. Ze hoort er al helemaal bij.
Langzaam druppelen de kerkgangers binnen. Nog even en de dienst begint. De engelse hymnes, de eeuwenoude belijdenissen en uitspraken maken altijd weer indruk. Al honderden jaren lang hebben mensen van alle tijden zich vermaand, bemoedigd, en getroost gevoeld door de woorden uit de gebedenboeken.

De dienst begint. Het Evangelie komt tot ons vanuit Exodus 2, het verhaal van Mozes in het biezen korfje. Heel anders zo in het Engels, maar toch ook heel vertrouwd en bekend. Het bijzondere aan een dienst in the Anglican Church is dat je nooit lang stil hoeft te zijn. Er wordt respons van de gemeente verwacht. Maar hoe anders de dienst ook mag zijn, het fundament is Christus Jezus.
‘ Our Lord Jesus Christ has told us that to enter the kingdom of heaven we must be born again of water and the Spirit, and has given us baptism as the sign and seal of this new birth. Here we are washed by the Holy Spirit and made clean. Here we are clothed with Christ, dying to sin that we may live his risen life. As children of God, we have a new dignity and God calls us to fullness of life’ zo begint de introduction.
Al lezend, luisterend, zingend en biddend genieten we van de dienst. Esther laat zich alles welgevallen en kijkt met haar glanzende oogjes alsof ze er al iets van begrijpt. Diensten zoals deze zijn voor Frans en mij uniek in die zin dat we met ons hele gezin in de kerk zitten en samen ons geloof mogen belijden. Wat een zegen.

Na deze woorden keren alle kerkgangers zich tot elkaar en antwoorden: ‘ and with you’
