Het liefdehart van de Vader
[Christus] vernederde Zich Zelf, en werd gehoorzaam tot de dood, ja tot de dood aan het kruis.

(…) Christus vernederde Zich zeker niet, omdat wij dat waardig waren of omdat wij dat verdiend hadden – want wie van ons zou deze dienst van zo’n verheven Persoon waardig zijn? – maar omdat Hij aan de Vader gehoorzaam wilde zijn. Hier doet Paulus met een enkel woord de hemel open en vergunt ons een gezicht in de afgrond van de Goddelijke Majesteit. Daarin kunnen wij zien en aanschouwen de onuitsprekelijk genadige wil en liefde van Gods Vaderlijke hart voor ons. Zodat we kunnen voelen, dat God Zelf van eeuwigheid een welbehagen had, in wat Christus, die heerlijke Persoon, voor ons zou doen en nu gedaan heeft.
Wiens hart zou hier niet van vreugde en blijdschap smelten? Wie zou hier niet lieven, loven en danken en op zijn beurt ook niet alleen knecht willen worden van de hele wereld (zie Filippenzen 2:7), maar liever nog minder en geringer worden dan niets? En dat wel allermeest als hij ziet dat God Zelf het zo welmenend en vriendelijk bedoeld heeft en de vruchten van de gehoorzaamheid van Zijn Zoon zo overvloedig uitstrooit en bewijst! Dit is, meen ik, door Christus tot de Vader komen. Dat wil het zeggen: Niemand komt tot Christus, tenzij de Vader hem trekt of lokt (zie Johannes 6:44). Hoe treffend, zoet en lieflijk zijn deze woorden die ons het liefdehart van de Vader openbaren!’

Het kan niet anders of lezers die Paulus` brieven kennen worden geraakt door de
diepe band – dieper dan welke andere brief dan ook – waarmee Paulus verbonden
was aan de gemeente van de Filippenzen. De gelovigen in Filippi lagen hem na aan
zijn hart, en hij stelde hun onderlinge eenheid in het geloof erg op prijs. Paulus
beschouwde de mensen als echte helpers bij zijn taak als apostel van de heidenen.
Paulus koos in zijn brief aan deze gemeente dan ook voor een persoonlijk en warm
taalgebruik in plaats van de hoogstaande retoriek die hij in andere brieven gebruikte
om zijn lezers te overtuigen van de betrouwbaarheid van zijn theologische
standpunten.
Paulus deed zijn uiterste best om de Filippenzen van alles en nog wat te leren over
de praktijk van het geloofsleven. Toen de Heere Jezus op aarde was, kon iedereen
zien dat Hij uiterlijk precies eender was dan andere mensen. Niemand had er erg in
dat Hij Zijn Goddelijke luister ingeleverd had voor het gewone mens zijn. De
vernedering die Jezus onderging koos Hij vrijwillig. Hij deed dat terwijl Hij voor
honderd procent gehoorzaam was aan Zijn Vader in de hemel. Zoals Christus de
Vader tot in de dood wilde volgen, zo moesten de jonge gelovigen in Filippi daartoe
in essentie ook bereid zijn.
De vrijwillige zelfvernedering van Christus ging ongelooflijk ver, ze reikte tot aan de
bittere en smadelijke kruisdood op Golgotha. Het woord vernedering – tapeinosis –
dat Paulus gebruikte ( Filip. 3 : 21 ) had te maken met sterfelijkheid,
vergankelijkheid.
De eeuwige God werd sterfelijk, vergankelijk, net als wij.
Hoe diep die vernedering echt was, wordt geaccentueerd door de woorden: ‘ dood
aan het kruis ‘. In de Grieks – Romeinse wereld vond iedereen de kruisiging de
meest wrede en vernederende doodsstraf. Vanwege het mensonterende karakter
ervan mochten zelfs de ergste Romeinse misdadigers deze straf niet ondergaan.
Voor de Joden was de kruisdood het symbool van een vervloeking door God. ( vgl
Deut. 21 : 22 – 23 / 1 Kor. 1 : 23 / Gal. 3 : 13 ) De woorden ‘ dood van het kruis ‘
vormen dan ook de climax van het eerste deel van het hoofdstuk. Christus heeft zich
in gehoorzaamheid vrijwillig tot de laagst denkbare, meest verachte plaats ter aarde
vernederd.
Hoe kunnen wij hier nu blij en dankbaar om worden vraag je je onwillekeurig af. Dat
kan als je begrijpt wie God is en wat Hij voor je gedaan heeft, en nog doet. Door het
sterven van de Heere Jezus is de dood opgeslokt en overwonnen.” Dood, waar is je
overwinning? Dood, waar is je angel?” roep je uit. De angel van de dood is de
zonde, en de zonde ontleent haar macht aan de wet. Maar door Christus Jezus
krijgen wij de overwinning. “ ( 1 Kor. 15 : 55 – 57 )
Bij het verder uitleggen van Zijn Heilsplan noemde Jezus nu God de Vader: de Mij
zendende. ( Joh. 6 : 32, 37, 39 ) Scherp en duidelijk stelde Hij dat het werk van God,
Zijn Vader, onlosmakelijk verbonden was en is met het komen tot Hemzelf.
De Vader, onmiskenbaar de God van de hemel, is de Zendende. Hij heeft Jezus uit
de hemel naar de aarde gezonden om Zijn Heilsplan uit te werken.
Ons bijzondere komen tot Jezus is alleen maar mogelijk doordat de Vader met Zijn
kracht trekt. Dit werkwoord ( helkuo ) is waarschijnlijk een verwijzing naar Jeremia 31
: 3, waar in een profetie over Israëls herstel, gesproken wordt over Gods liefde.
Van Zichzelf zei Jezus dat Hij als de door Zijn kruisdood heen verheerlijkte Heer,
iedereen tot Zich zal trekken. ( Joh. 12 : 32 ) In deze handeling komt Gods
exclusieve genade en liefde tot uiting.
Dit begin van God vandaan is de garantie dat het goed komt met al Zijn kinderen,
want God laat nooit varen wat Zijn hand begon. Het Heilsplan van God komt tot
voltooiing! ( Openbaringen 22 )
De Heilige Geest zorgt ervoor dat we Gods woorden horen, en geloven. De
blijdschap en vreugde komen vanzelf in ons hart.
