Jezus ging sterven. ‘ Hij gaf de Geest ‘ betekent: ‘ Hij blies de laatste adem uit.’ Het uitblazen van de levensadem ging gepaard met een luide roep. Het was geen ongearticuleerde doodsschreeuw. In Lucas 23 : 46 zegt Lucas wat Hij riep: ‘ Vader in Uw handen beveel Ik Mijn geest. Jezus` opdracht die Hij van Zijn Vader ontvangen had, was ten einde. In Zijn sterven voltooide Hij het belangrijkste deel van Zijn roeping, namelijk ‘ Zijn leven te geven als losprijs voor velen. ‘ ( Matth. 20 : 28 ) Je ziet dus duidelijk dat Hij een menselijke geest had, die echter begiftigd was met een Goddelijke kracht. Geen mens zou met een luide roep kunnen sterven, dat kon Jezus alleen omdat Hij ook God was.
5. De ziel is onderscheiden van het lichaam. ( Matth. 26 : 41 / 1 Kor. 5 : 3 – 5 / 2 Kor. 7 : 1 / Kol. 2 : 5 )
“ Blijf wakker en bidt dat jullie niet in beproeving komen, de geest is wel gewillig, maar het vlees is zwak. “ ( Math. 26 : 41 )
De geest waarover de Heere Jezus het hier had, is een menselijke geest die door God verlost is van de macht der zonde en door de Heilige Geest geïnspireerd wordt. ( Psalm 51 : 14b / Rom. 8 : 16. ) Het ‘ vlees ‘ is een uitdrukking voor de mens in zijn natuurlijke beperktheid. D.w.z. door de zondemacht niet in staat om God te kennen. ( Matth. 16 : 17 ) en Zijn wil te doen. Daarom moeten volgelingen van Jezus bidden om bewaard te blijven in de verzoeking omdat, hoewel de geest gewillig is om God te gehoorzamen, het ‘ vlees ‘ zwak en traag is. De ziel is dus onderscheiden van het lichaam, en blijft dat ook na de bekering.
“ Wat mijzelf betreft: in persoon ben ik afwezig, maar in de geest ben ik bij u “ ( 1 Kor. 5 : 3 – 5 ) Paulus bedoelde dat hij wat de geest betreft bij de Korintieérs aanwezig was, om precies te zijn, dat hij door het gemeenschappelijk deel hebben aan de Heilige Geest met zijn geest in hun midden aanwezig was. De Heilige Geest, die de gelovigen hadden ontvangen, waarborgde de eenheid. ( 1 Kor. 2 : 12 / 3 : 16 ) Ook uit deze tekst kun je opmaken dat lichaam en ziel onderscheiden zijn.
“ Omdat ons deze beloften gegeven zijn, geliefde broeders en zusters, moeten we ons van alle geestelijke en lichamelijke smetten reinigen, en vol ontzag voor God ons hele leven reinigen. “ ( 2 Kor. 7 : 1 ) Met vlees en geest bedoelde Paulus het lichaam, zowel als het innerlijk van de mens. ( Rom. 8 : 12, 14 / 12 : 1 ) De mens in zijn natuurlijke beperktheid moeten wij als zodanig erkennen en ons vol ontzag voor God reinigen. Geest en lichaam blijven dus onderscheiden.
“ Want hoewel ik lijfelijk niet aanwezig ben, ben ik in de geest bij u, en zie ik met vreugde hoe hecht u verbonden bent, en hoe onwrikbaar uw geloof in Christus is. “ ( Kol. 2 : 5 )
Paulus kon niet lichamelijk aanwezig zijn in Kolosse, maar wel in de geest. ( 1 Kor. 5 : 3 – 5 ) waaruit blijkt dat deze vorm van aanwezigheid zeer zinvol was. Bij ‘ aanwezigheid in de geest ‘ moet je denken aan betrokkenheid vanuit het hart ( 1 Tess. 2 : 17 ) en een meelevende strijd in het gebed. ( Kol. 2 : 1 ) Opnieuw een bewijs dat lichaam en geest onderscheiden zijn, die echter wanneer zij geheiligd zijn tot een grote harmonie kunnen komen.
