Maar op de eerste dag van de week gingen ze bij het ochtendgloren naar het graf met de geurige olie die ze bereid hadden. Bij het graf aangekomen zagen ze echter dat de steen voor het graf weggerold was. En toen ze naar binnen gingen vonden ze het lichaam van de Heere Jezus niet. Hierdoor raakten ze helemaal van streek. Plotseling stonden er twee mannen in stralende gewaden bij hen. Ze werden door schrik bevangen en sloegen hun handen voor hun ogen. De mannen zeiden tegen hen: “ waarom zoekt u de Levende bij de doden? Hij is niet hier, Hij is uit de dood opgewekt. Herinner u wat Hij u gezegd heeft toen Hij nog in Galilea was. De Mensenzoon moest worden uitgeleverd aan zondaars en moest gekruisigd worden en op de derde dag opgestaan. Toen herinnerden ze zich Zijn woorden. ( Lucas 24 : 1 – 8 )
Nadat Jezus Zijn laatste adem uitgeblazen had werd het stil op de grafheuvel van Golgotha. “ Vader, Mijn leven is in Uw handen! “ was Jezus`laatste roep geweest. Eén van de Romeinse officieren die bij de kruisiging was geweest, was tot geloof gekomen. “ Geen twijfel mogelijk! Deze Man hoorde bij God. “ had hij gezegd. Het afschuwelijke en desastreuze van het hele gebeuren drong langzaam tot de menigte door. Iedereen ging huilend naar huis. Daarbij passeerden ze de leerlingen die een eindje verderop stonden te kijken. Ze stonden bij de vrouwen die Jezus vanuit Galilea vergezeld hadden.
Eén van de Joodse leiders – Josef van Arimathea – keurde de moord op Jezus af. Jozef was een man met een goed en eerlijk karakter. Hoewel hij zijn geloof in Jezus niet openlijk beleden had, geloofde hij in een spoedige komst van Gods nieuwe wereld. Het nieuws over Jezus`terechtstelling had hem bijzonder geraakt. Zodra Jozef het bericht bereikte dat Jezus gestorven was haastte hij zich naar Pilatus en vroeg hem toestemming om het lichaam van Jezus van het kruis te halen en te begraven. Dat mocht. Josef deed wat hij gevraagd had, wikkelde het dode lichaam van Jezus in doeken en legde het in een nieuw en leeg graf dat uitgehakt was in een rots. Josef moest zich haasten want het was al bijna sabbat.
Een groepje vrouwen uit Galilea volgde Josefs verrichtingen van een afstand. Toen Jezus in het graf gelegd was gingen ze terug naar Jeruzalem om geurige olie met kruiden klaar te maken. Toen vield de sabbat in, een dag waarop ze niets konden doen omdat de Joodse wet dat verboden had. Zo rustte het lichaam van onze Heere Jezus Christus in het graf tot aan de derde dag. Toen de sabbat voorbij was haastten enkele vrouwen zich heel vroeg in de morgen naar het graf om Zijn lichaam te balsemen. Ze wilden Zijn hoofd, gezicht, Zijn gewonde handen en voeten zalven. Bovendien wilden ze geurige specerijen over Zijn dode lichaam strooien. Hoewel Jezus niet meer in leven was, verflauwde de ijver van de vrouwen voor de Naam en de Zaak van hun Meester geen moment. De specerijen die ze de avond voor de sabbat hadden klaargemaakt brachten ze naar het graf. Het was nog maar nauwelijks licht toen Maria Magdalena en Johanna, en Maria de moeder van Jakobus zich naar de graftuin haastten.
Met kloppend hart naderden ze het graf waarin ze Jezus wisten. Ze hadden er totaal niet bij stilgestaan dat de steen loodzwaar was en het hen nooit zou lukken om die van het graf af te wentelen. Ineens stonden ze stil. De steen was weg van voor het graf! Verstijfd van schrik staarden ze naar de donkere grafopening en raakten in paniek. Maar in een punt van de tijd, in een flits stonden er twee mannen bij hen. De mannen droegen blinkende kleding. Verblind en vertwijfeld sloegen de vrouwen hun handen voor de ogen. Ze hoefden nergens bang voor te zijn want God in de hemel zond Zijn engelen om hen te helpen. De mannen zeiden: “ Waarom zoeken jullie de Levende bij de doden? Jezus is niet meer hier, Hij is opgestaan, Hij leeft. Denk terug aan Zijn woorden. Heeft Hij niet duidelijk gezegd dat Hij aan zondaars moest worden uitgeleverd, en dat Hij op de derde dag weer op zou staan uit de dood?
Wanneer de vrouwen Jezus` woorden hadden begrepen, en juist hadden geïnterpreteerd, dan zouden ze Zijn opstanding hebben verwacht. De engelen herhaalden slechts wat Jezus had gezegd. De Mensenzoon moest gevangen genomen worden, om uitgeleverd te worden aan zondaren. De Heere Jezus had er geen doekjes om gewonden en duidelijk gezegd dat Hij gekruisigd zou worden. Toen de woorden van de engelen tot de vrouwen doordrongen, werden ze herinnerd aan alles wat Jezus gezegd had. Grote blijdschap en oprecht geloof vulden hun hart. Maria, Johanna en Maria Magdalena aarzelden geen seconde, ze zochten direct de elf leerlingen op die hen steeds vergezeld hadden.
Maar de sombere gezichten van de mannen klaarden niet op, niemand geloofde er een woord van. Ze vonden het maar geklets. Toch was het de heerlijke waarheid. Jezus was opgestaan!
