De Geest van God doet wonderen. ( Romeinen 15 : 19 )
‘ Door Zijn macht waarmee ik tekenen en wonderen verricht door de macht van Gods Geest. ‘ De missie van Paulus ging met de kracht van tekenen en wonderen gepaard.
( 1 Kor. 2 : 4)
‘De prediking die ik verkondigde, overtuigde niet door de kracht van de Geest, want uw geloof moest niet op menselijke wijsheid steunen,maar op de kracht van God.’
( 2 Kor. 12 : 12)
‘Alles wat een apostel tot een apostel maakt heb ik u laten zien: elke volharding, alle tekeningen wonderen, elke kracht.’
( 1 Tess. 1 : 5 )
‘Onze verkondiging aan u getuigde immers niet alleen door onze woorden, maar ook door de overweldigende kracht van de Heilige Geest, ‘
Dit betekent dat de kracht van Jezus Christus in tekenen en wonderen die Paulus verrichtte tot uiting kwam. De Bijbel gebruikt de woorden ‘ tekenen en wonderen ‘ vaak in één adem om daarmee aan te geven dat ze heenwijzen naar de Heere Jezus en naar het verbazingwekkende aspect van de tekenen en wonderen. ( Hand. 2 : 22, 43 / 6 : 8 / 7 : 36 )
De uitdrukking die Paulus gebruikte om de kracht van de Geest van God aan te geven is ontstaan door alle wonderen die hij al had mogen verrichten in de dienst aan het koninkrijk van God. Wanneer je de geschiedenis van Paulus na zijn bekering leest, dan valt het je op dat hij eigenlijk niets zei of deed waarin hij niet door de Heilige Geest geïnspireerd en bekrachtigd werd. Je kunt daaruit concluderen dat wij als christenen niets zo moeten zoeken als de vervulling met de Heilige Geest.
De opsomming die de apostel Paulus gaf, was bedoeld om de eer van God tot uitdrukking te brengen. Tot eer van God somde hij de geweldige dingen op die de Heere door hem heen had gedaan. Het was een krachtige bevestiging van de waarheid van de christelijke leer, dat deze zo’n succes had. Paulus heeft in veel plaatsen – van Jeruzalem af tot Illyrikum toe – het Evangelie verkondigd.
Hij preekte in plaatsen waar men het Evangelie nog nooit gehoord had. Hij brak braakliggende grond op en voerde het christendom in waar eeuwenlang niets anders geheerst had dan tovenarij en afgodendienst. Paulus zei dat Christus daar de Bewerker van was. ( Rom. 15 : 18 ) De kracht van de Geest in zowel Paulus als de andere apostelen bracht tekenen en wonderen tot stand!
Paulus zelf kon geen enkele ziel gehoorzaam maken wanneer de kracht van de Geest van God zijn werken niet te hulp kwam. Dit is een bemoediging voor trouwe volgelingen van Jezus. De almachtige Geest van God brengt kracht in zwakheid. De bekeerde volken waren de vreugde van Paulus, de kroon van zijn blijdschap. Hij schreef hierover om anderen zich met hem te laten verblijden. Als je vruchtbaar wilt zijn in het vruchtdragen voor Jezus, dan kun je niets beters doen dan vragen om de kracht van de Geest van God.
