Ietwat moeizaam laat de oude man zich naast mij neer en lacht even verontschuldigend. “ Ik ben niet meer gewend aan zo`n lage auto. Kom, laten we gaan.” We rijden het kronkelige buitenpad verder af, en slaan de richting van Middelburg in. Bas praat. Het was een week zoals alle voorgaande. “Gelukkig is het niet meer zo koud, vandaag zelfs een uur in de tuin gewerkt! “ Nee, niet veel mensen gesproken, en ook niet veel mensen gezien. Het is vreemd, soms praat ik hardop tegen mijzelf. ” Zou hij over zijn leven praten? Of tegen zijn overleden vrouw? Of misschien over de toekomst, of hij in zijn huis zal blijven wonen, of niet? Ik vraag niets. In plaats daarvan zeg ik : “ hoe vind je het om tachtig te zijn? Ben je nu vanbinnen nog dezelfde persoon als toen je jonger was?” “ Zeker. Je verandert eigenlijk niet zoveel. Je blijft vanbinnen altijd de jongen die je was. Alleen de buitenkant wordt oud.” Ik zeg: “ Dat is toch eigenlijk het bewijs dat onze ziel voor de eeuwigheid geschapen is? Want onze ziel wordt nooit ouder dan hij is, hij is onze binnenkant.” Daar zijn we het allebei over eens.
Als we in het vriendelijk ogende verzorgingstehuis aankomen, staat de zaal uitnodigend open. Ietwat onwennig kijkt hij rond. De zaal ziet er gezellig uit. In een mum van tijd zitten we op een strategisch goede plek. Hier zal niets van de presentatie ons ontgaan! Naast hem een oude dame die niet veel lijkt te verstaan. Maar gelukkig daar draait zich al iemand om en begroet hem hartelijk. Het zorgelijke gezicht van mijn oude vriend klaart op. Er worden wat begroetingen en algemeenheden uitgewisseld, een begin is er!
Terwijl rappe handen ons van koffie en thee voorzien komt er een bereidwillige activiteitenbegeleidster aan en nodigt ons uit om aan het eind van de middag een praatje te komen maken. Mijn oude vriend kijkt opgewekt en zegt: “ tot straks dan! “ “Wow, hij vindt het leuk hier!” denk ik glunderend.
Zo begint de presentatie. De luidspreker werkt niet optimaal en vraagt technische ondersteuning. Vanuit de achterste regionen van de zaal klinkt wat gelach en gedoe. Ik bedenk grinnikend dat het niet veel uitmaakt of je tachtig of vijftien bent. Je begint gewoon een beetje te klieren als je achterin een ruimte zit en de les niet tijdig beginnen kan.
Even later is het stil. De eerste beelden duiken op. We zien een gelukkig jong gezin en horen over het mooie werk dat de missie van het ouderpaar uitmaakt. Zij zijn samen met hun drie zonen uitgezonden voor de Mission Aviation Fellowship. Bastiaan – de vader – draagt de verantwoording voor het dagelijkse management en zorgt tevens voor de uitbreiding van het MAF programma. Corina – de moeder – geeft trainingen aan nationale MAF stafleden en kerkleiders. In deze trainingen worden hele bijzonder thema`s behandeld. Gezondheid, trauma en verzoening zijn de centrale onderwerpen. In een land als Zuid – Soudan is dat heel bijzonder. Het is een land dat door twee leiders en een groep afgescheiden stammen wordt “ geregeerd “.Omdat er geen centrale leiding is in Soudan, heerst er een totale anarchie. Elke stam denkt dat leden van een andere stam doodsvijanden zijn. Het resultaat is dat bloedvergieten en moordpartijen aan de orde van de dag zijn. Hoe bijzonder is het dan ook dat Corina deze partijen met de boodschap van Gods Woord duidelijk probeert te maken dat verzoening noodzakelijk is! Slechts als de gewelddadige conflicten ophouden zal er weer een opbouw van het land plaats kunnen vinden. Daar komt nog bij dat de infrastructuur zeer beperkt is, en de wegen in de regentijd uiterst moeilijk begaanbaar. Veel hulpverleningsinstanties en kerkleiders zijn afhankelijk van het vervoer dat MAF biedt.
Plotseling verschijnen beelden van jonge rebellen op het witte scherm, ze zien er gevaarlijk en bloeddorstig uit. Je zult ze maar tegenkomen! Aan de andere kant zien we beelden van vreedzame jongelui die aandachtig lijken te luisteren naar het onderwijs dat Corina hen geeft. Ik bedenk bewonderend: “wat een moed! “ Het blijkt – zo vertelt de thuisfrontcommissie – dat het resultaat vaak tijdelijk is, omdat de verschillende stamhoofden of kerkelijk leiders een decennialang durende haat niet zomaar van tafel kunnen vegen. Zodra er maar iets gebeurd, dan begint de oorlog en haatdragerij van voren af aan. Hoe moeilijk is het om in de praktijk van het leven werkelijk een navolger van Christus te zijn.
De presentie nadert zijn einde. Als de lichten weer aanfloepen en we nog wat drinken probeer ik contact te maken met het fragiele oude dametje dat naast ons zit. Zij is doof, maar als het lukt om me verstaanbaar te maken, kijken twee hele lieve ogen mij aan en hoor ik dat ze naast het verzorgingstehuis woont. Wat ziet ze er leuk uit! Een mooi ragfijn gouden kettinkje hangt aan haar hals en ze draagt een zachtgekleurd mohairen pullover. Even later ontmoeten we weer een oude bekende. Het moede bleke gezicht van mijn oude vriend wordt wat voller van kleur. Er blijken heel wat mensen te komen die hij nog uit zijn Middelburgse tijd kent, maar er zijn er ook genoeg die uit Vlissingen stammen. Leuk zeg! “Maar wat zijn ze veranderd!”Zegt hij steeds verschrikt. Ja, we worden allemaal steeds ouder. Als je heel oud bent, dan word je ook steeds fragieler en teerder.
Nog wat later luisteren we naar de uitleg van de activiteitenbegeleidster. Ongelooflijk leuke dingen organiseren ze hier! Je kunt er komen eten, maar er is ook een zangvereniging die “ van bas tot sopraan” heet. Er is een ouderensoos, en er wordt voorgelezen. Er is een bibliotheek en een woensdagmiddagclub. Je kunt er handwerken in de handwerkvereniging “één recht, één averecht.” Er is een Bijbeluurtje en bewegen voor ouderen. Er is zelfs een gezelligheidsvereniging! Ik sta paf.
Als we naar huis rijden zijn we het er over eens dat het erg leuk is daar in Middelburg! Ontzettend veel zegeningen mogen wij genieten in een land als Nederland, ook onze oude mensen! Thuisgekomen schilder ik de middag in geuren en kleuren voor ogen. Onze zoon van 23 weet het zeker, hij schrijft zich alvast in! Het lijkt mij wat vroeg, maar ik weet zeker dat ik nog veel meer oudere mensen mee zou willen nemen naar dit prachtige activiteitenprogramma!
