Marcus zouden we ook wel de tolk van Petrus kunnen noemen. Zijn naam was Romeins, zijn afkomst hoogstwaarschijnlijk Joods. Zijn Evangelie is namelijk gebaseerd op diens ooggetuigenverslag. Er bestaat een vermoeden dat Marcus het in Egypte geschreven zou hebben, maar er zijn ook aannames die zeggen dat het in Rome geschreven is. Volgens Eusebius – een geschiedschrijver – beschrijft het evangelie nauwkeurig wat de Here Jezus hier op aarde gezegd en gedaan heeft, maar de volgorde klopt niet helemaal. Het is ook erg kort, en bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit bevestigingen van de andere evangeliën. Maar dat maakt het boek van Marcus niet minder interessant! Het geeft juist aan hoe waardevol, opmerkenswaardig en wonderlijk de daden en woorden van de Here Jezus waren.
In vergelijking tot de verslagen van de andere apostelen schrijft Marcus niets over de geboorte van de Here Jezus. Het Griekse woord “ euthus “ vaak vertaald met “ meteen “ komt zo’n veertig keer in zijn teksten voor, om de verschillende episoden uit het leven van Jezus met elkaar te verbinden. Dit geeft een bepaalde dynamiek aan de gebeurtenissen. Jezus lijkt voortdurend in beweging te zijn: genezingen, demonenuitdrijvingen en twistgesprekken met Zijn tegenstanders of het onderwijs aan Zijn leerlingen wisselen elkaar in rap tempo af!
Marcus valt met de deur in huis en begint zijn evangelie met de woorden ; “ Het begin van het Evangelie van Jezus Christus, Zoon van God. “ Hij verwijst naar Genesis 1 om te benadrukken dat Jezus het Begin geweest is van het Goede Nieuws van God voor de hele schepping. Over de geboorte van de Here Jezus lezen we eigenlijk niks, Marcus concentreert zich voornamelijk op het evangelie van Jezus` volwassenheid.
Volgens de traditie is Marcus later de stichter van de Kerk van Alexandrië geworden, één van de oorspronkelijke zetels in het christendom die vandaag de Koptisch – Orthodoxe Kerk wordt genoemd.
Hoewel Marcus niets over de geboorte van de Here Jezus geschreven heeft, moet hij zeker vermeld worden als een leerling die de Here Jezus uitermate liefgehad heeft, en zich in Zijn geboorte verblijd heeft. Volgens sommige tradities was Marcus de man die water bracht naar het huis waar het Laatste Avondmaal gehouden werd. ( Marcus 14 : 13 ) In de daaropvolgende nacht, toen Jezus gevangen genomen werd, lezen we over een jongeman die kwam kijken wat er gaande was. Hij had alleen een doek om zijn lichaam geslagen. Toen hij gegrepen werd, liet hij het doek achter en vluchtte weg. Omdat alleen het evangelie van Marcus hiervan melding maakt, is het zeer waarschijnlijk Marcus zelf geweest. ( Marcus 14 : 51, 52 )
Marcus moet dus nog erg jong geweest zijn toen hij Jezus ging volgen. Petrus zal hem later “ mijn zoon “ noemen. ( 1 Petrus 5 : 13 )
De koptische traditie vermeldt dat Marcus als een martelaar gestorven is. In 828 zou zijn lichaam uit Alexandrië door Venetiaanse zeelieden ontvreemd zijn, en overgebracht naar Venetië. Om zijn graf werd de basiliek de San Marco gebouwd, waar zijn stoffelijke resten als relikwieën worden vereerd. Dat zou Marcus zelf nooit gewild hebben. Hij komt uit de schriften over als een zeer bescheiden, maar vurige liefhebber van onze Here Jezus Christus. Ook hij zag uit naar de komst van Zijn eeuwig Koninkrijk!
