Chris was niet gezond, daar hadden Aartjes ouders haar voor gewaarschuwd. Hij had een hartkwaal. Toen was daar nog niet zoveel over bekend als nu. In Leiden wisten ze wel veel. De slagaders lagen verkeerd, dat kon heel gevaarlijk zijn. Niemand die precies wist hoe het leven er voor hem uit zou zien. Welke prognoses er waren. Toch trouwde ze met hem. Samen kregen ze drie kinderen. Ze waren gelukkig. Chris geloofde. Aartje vond het best moeilijk voor zichzelf te geloven dat de Heere Jezus ook voor haar geleden had en gestorven was.
Op een stralende dag, toen ze met het hele gezinnetje op het Veerse Meer aan het varen waren kreeg Chris een hartaanval. Hij kon de boot nog net aan de kant sturen. Er waren omstanders die hielpen en de ziekenauto lieten komen. De politie bracht Aartje en de kinderen thuis. Alles liep nog redelijk goed af gelukkig, maar onbezorgd was hun leven niet!
Aartje kon al vanaf haar geboorte niet goed lopen, en had best vaak pijn. Toch zorgde ze dapper voor de kinderen, en voor Chris. Hij werkte op een drukkerij, was goed en kundig in zijn beroep.
Het was in die tijd dat Aartje steeds vaker zelf ook al haar zorgen en noden bij de Heere bracht. Steeds meer alles van Hem ging verwachten.
Op een dag moest Chris naar Leiden, voor verder onderzoek. Het ging niet zo goed met hem. Hij had hartritmestoornissen. Wat verlangde hij ernaar om weer naar huis te mogen, naar zijn vrouw en kinderen! Maar op de dag dat Aartje hem op kwam halen gebeurde het vreselijke:
Aartje hoorde van de artsen dat haar man overleden was door een hartstilstand. In plaats van een blijde terugkeer naar huis was er groot verdriet, en diep gemis.
Nog maar enkele maanden later werd dat verdriet nog dieper. Haar jongste dochtertje, Heleentje, stierf totaal onverwacht.
Hoe ze die eerste tijd doorgekomen is, dat weet ze niet meer. Ze kon eigenlijk niet verder, maar ze moest. Gelukkig was er de gemeente, veel lieve mensen om haar heen.
Boven alles was de Heere er. Hij liet haar niet alleen. “ Ik zal u niet begeven, en Ik zal u niet verlaten “ die woorden kwamen met kracht in haar ziel. Ze kon verder, dag voor dag.
Zo leidde haar Heiland haar zachtjes langs de oevers van haar gemis in de grazige weiden van Zijn Woord. Het werd Avondmaalstijd. Aartje dacht elke dag hoe het zou moeten. Zo graag wilde ze gaan, maar was het wel goed? De Heere leidde haar en bracht haar Zijn Woorden in herinnering. Hij bracht haar aan Zijn tafel, in volle vrede.
Elke dag neemt ze de tijd voor haar stille tijd. Meestal is dat tussen de middag. Dan zit ze op haar balkon, of gewoon in haar kamer. Vlakbij de mooie foto`s van Heleentje en van Chris. Ze leest in haar Bijbel en wordt dag voor dag met hemels manna verzadigd.
Laatst gingen we naar Intratuin. Voor het eerst van haar leven zat ze in een rolstoel, en had ze geen pijn bij het lopen. Want ze zat. Ze straalde en genoot.
Wat is God goed ! Als we het maar zien.
